Techo International Airport – New International Air Gateway of Cambodia

On September 9, 2025, Cambodia inaugurated Techo International Airport (KTI), the largest and most modern international airport in the country’s history. This is one of the national key projects with an investment capital of billions of USD, considered a historic milestone marking the beginning of a new stage for changing the face of Cambodia’s aviation infrastructure, which is modernized. Techo International Airport will not only replace the long-serving Phnom Penh International Airport, but will also contribute to its mission to become a true gateway to Cambodia tourism, facilitating Cambodia’s ability to attract tourists, investors and promote international trade.

Where Is Techo International Airport and How Big Is It?

Techo International Airport can be found situated within Kandal Stueng District (Kandal Province) and Takeo Province as well, about 20 to 30 km south of Phnom Penh. The proximity to the capital makes it a little easier to reach, while simultaneously it is still sufficiently far from private sector projects in urban areas to actually relieve pressure on urban infrastructure and also fosters development in the suburban areas.

The entire area of the airport is more than 2,600 hectares, one of the largest airports in Southeast Asia. The project is divided into many phases:

  • Present: capacity to serve 13 million passengers/year.
  • By 2030: expand to 30 million passengers/year.
  • By 2050: aim to achieve 50 million passengers/year, equal to many large aviation hubs in the region.

The huge size and potential for future expansion shows Cambodia’s strategic vision to make Techo International Airport an important Phnom Penh flight hub, not only responding to tourism demand, but also supporting trade and logistics growth.

Inside Cambodia’s Biggest Airport: Design & World-Class Facilities

Techo International Airport is the result of a collaboration with Foster + Partners, one of the world’s leading architectural firms from the UK. In terms of amenities, KTI is built according to 4F international standards, capable of receiving large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. The modern passenger terminal is equipped with a series of high-class services:

  • Duty-Free shopping area with many famous international brands.

Flight routes and airlines

Immediately after its official opening, all domestic and international flights that previously landed at Phnom Penh International Airport were transferred to Techo International Airport with the new code KTI. This means that visitors from Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and other neighboring countries flying to Phnom Penh will all land at this modern airport. Major airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air, Cambodia Airways, AirAsia, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Singapore Airlines and many others have quickly announced that they will transfer all their operating schedules to the new airport.

In the initial phase, KTI mainly serves routes in Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia – important tourist markets of Cambodia. Nonetheless, equipped with 4F international standard infrastructure and runways that can receive “super planes” such as the Airbus A380 or Boeing 747, the airport is likely to add new destinations soon to its network in the Middle East, Europe, and even North America. This expansion not only allows Phnom Penh to catch up on connectivity but also assists Cambodia in its aim to become a potential hub in the region.

How Techo International Airport Transforms Cambodia Tourism

The official operation of Techo International Airport is expected to create a big boost for Cambodia’s tourism industry.  As the gateway to Cambodia, the new airport with modern infrastructure, high passenger capacity and wide connectivity, the new airport makes it easier and more convenient for international visitors to Phnom Penh or travel to Cambodia. This is also an opportunity for Cambodia to improve the quality of tourism services, attracting many customer segments, especially high-end customers.

The airport also contributes to economic development in the suburbs of the capital by creating modern satellite cities, which also enhances the image of Cambodia in the international stage. Just from Phnom Penh, guests have easy access to key destinations like Angkor Wat in Siem Reap or the beach at Sihanoukville, creating Cambodia as a major stopover destination when visiting the Southeast Asia region for travel.
