Exploring Laos with kids can be an unforgettable, yet idyllic experience. Here, as in most countries in Southeast Asia, children are kings, and in Laos, a small country renowned for its tranquility, sheltered from tourist invasion or excessive urban development, everything is still on a human scale.
However, before your Laos family trip, there are still a few things to know and prepare for a successful family experience in this small Buddhist country.
From a practical point of view, you should know that baby seats are almost non-existent in cars and there is no babysitting service in or near hotels. So don’t expect baby seats in cars, or in restaurants. Moreover, in large cities, it is easy to find diapers and formula milk in household stores, but in rural areas, it is almost impossible to find them. Therefore, pay attention to these items before visiting Laos with the kids.
From a hygiene viewpoint, remember to wash your hands often and carry a cleansing gel for the face.
When visiting the countryside or rural areas, always take care of your child and keep him/her away from dangerous animals. Don’t let him venture alone into areas that served as battlefields during the Vietnam War, because there are still bomb mines here.
If Laotians generally like children, reception is sometimes problematic, especially for toddlers. So can we travel with babies or young children? In Laos, we would otherwise advise against doing this, unless you do so with full awareness of the risks and you are able to account for them properly in any case.
Therefore, it is necessary to consider a calm program, with age-appropriate activities and sufficient rest for your family. Of course, it is not allowed to stay in the forest or spend the night in the village.
For older children, no problem. However, our young people in general do not have the same passion for secular temples as we do. If your child is bored, involve him in outdoor activities. In Luang Prabang, the waterfalls of Tat Sae and Tat Kuang Si should impress them. Boat trips are also sure to delight them on your Laos family holidays.
Most children enjoy the distinctive garden of Hindu and Buddhist sculptures in Xieng Khuan, a suburb of Vientiane. With its swimming pools and bowling alleys, the capital also offers some more traditional activities.
Think about the adaptations of your children during the trip. They are even more sensitive than us to the heat, the sun, the changes in schedules, and the fatigue of long journeys. Don’t underestimate the ability to quickly evacuate a child to neighboring Thailand in the event of an emergency.
