CAMBODIA'S ANGKOR - THE LEGENDARY LOST CITY OF THE WORLD

Angkor is a complex of Cambodian relics, history, culture, and religion in the northwest of Tonle Sap, Siem Reap province. It was the former capital of the Khmer Kingdom from the 9th to the 15th century. In Sanskrit, “Angkor” means “city.” According to archaeologists, this is one of the largest cities in the world from the pre-industrial periods, spanning 1,150 square miles.

The Angkor Complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1992. The whole complex is a vast territory including more than 80 monuments built during the period from the 7th to the 8th centuries. They are stone structures of mountain-temple type of Hinduism and Buddhism. The most famous are Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, two of the five largest temples in the Angkor Complex.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Angkor?

Between November and March is the best time to visit Angkor because the weather is dry, the temperatures are mild, and it’s easier to walk around. For tourists who want to visit several temples over several days, this is the best time to go.

Angkor can be visited at any time of the year, but conditions vary:

  • April through May: it’s hotter, and fewer people are there. This time of year is good for tourists who don’t mind the heat or shorter sightseeing days.
  • June through October: is the “green season.” It’s more humid and rains sometimes, but there are fewer people and the scenery is greener. You can still come if you change your routes and schedules.

No matter what time of year it is, the best times to visit are early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it is cooler and there are fewer people. Instead of trying to do too much in one day, a well-thought-out plan takes into account things like weather, time, and physical effort.

>>> If you care about travel comfort and efficiency, you should plan your trip to Angkor around daily limits that are more reasonable than assumptions made during peak season. Read more: When is the Best Time to Visit Cambodia?

What Are the Best Destinations in the Angkor Complex?

The Angkor complex is not limited to Angkor Wat alone; it forms the cultural core of a much wider region centered around Siem Reap and its surrounding heritage sites.

A well-structured Angkor tour typically combines major temple complexes with nearby cities and regions to provide historical context and travel balance.

We would like to recommend some key destinations commonly included in Angkor-focused itineraries:

  • Angkor Wat: the most important monument of the Angkor complex and the symbolic heart of Khmer civilization, known for its scale, symmetry, and detailed bas-reliefs.

    Close-up of a serene stone face carved into the towers of Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom, Cambodia.

    Smiling stone faces at the entrance of Bayon Temple, Angkor Wat

  • Angkor Thom: a former royal city that illustrates the political and urban organization of the Khmer Empire, home to several major temples and gateways.

  • Siem Reap: the main gateway to Angkor, serving as the logistical base for temple visits, accommodation, and cultural services.

    Angkor Wat is especially stunning in the rainy season, surrounded by emerald-green landscapes and moody skies.

    Siem Reap becomes even more enchanting during the rainy season, with lush green landscapes and serene temple views

>>> Recommend tour:

Beyond the core Angkor area, many itineraries extend to nearby destinations to complete the cultural and geographic picture of Cambodia:

  • Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s capital, often included to provide historical and political context before or after visiting Angkor.

    A grand palace building with elegant architecture, a central flag flying on top, and a golden statue monument in front, under a colorful sunset sky.

    The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, glowing beautifully under the pink and orange hues of the evening sky.

  • Kampong Cham: a quieter riverside town along the Mekong, offering insight into rural life and regional culture.
  • Sihanoukville & Koh Rong: coastal extensions that allow travelers to balance intensive temple exploration with rest and beach time.

>>> Recommend tour:

Rather than visiting every site, an effective Angkor itinerary focuses on clear priorities, logical sequencing, and realistic pacing, ensuring that temple visits remain insightful rather than exhausting.

Explore Angkor through a route that connects its temples with the broader Cambodian landscape, designed around understanding not overload.

My friends and I decided to take this trip to Thailand, and it was so fascinating. We have never visited a floating market like Famnoen Saduak, so this was so exciting to experience the vibrant atmosphere. The Grand Palace left us in awe with its intricate architecture and rich history. Then, the cruise on the Chao Phraya River gave us a unique and romantic view of Bangkok. Big thanks to our guide for making the trip smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommend this tour for first-time travellers to Thailand!

Common Questions Travelers Ask Us

Most travelers need 2 to 4 days to explore Angkor comfortably. This allows time to visit major sites such as Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, adjust visits to weather and crowd levels, and avoid physical exhaustion from rushing between temples.

Yes, Angkor can be visited year-round. The most comfortable period is from November to March, while the green season from June to October offers fewer crowds and lush scenery. The key is adjusting visiting hours and daily routes according to weather conditions.

Focusing only on Angkor Wat gives an incomplete picture. A well-planned Angkor trip usually includes Angkor Thom and Siem Reap, and may extend to destinations like Phnom Penh or the Mekong region to better understand Cambodia’s history and cultural context.
