Da Nang sits at almost the exact midpoint of Vietnam’s coastline, and that geography is its biggest asset. Within 30 minutes of the city center, you can be on one of the best beaches in Southeast Asia, driving up a mountain pass with views over the sea, or walking the ancient streets of Hoi An. No other city in Vietnam packs that combination into such a compact area.
This Da Nang travel guide covers everything you need to plan a trip, from how to get here to the best neighborhoods, beaches, food, and day trips.
Where Is Da Nang Located?
- Location: Central Vietnam, 900 km south of Hanoi, 970 km north of Ho Chi Minh City
- Airport: Da Nang International Airport (DAD), 3 km from city center
- Area: 11.859,59 km2
- After 2025 provincial merger: Da Nang City merged with Quang Nam province.
- Population: 3.065.628
- Population density: 883 person/km²
- Main draws: My Khe Beach, Marble Mountains, Hai Van Pass, day trips to Hoi An and Hue
- Best for: Beach holidays, city breaks, central Vietnam exploration
Da Nang is the third-largest city in Vietnam and the main gateway to central Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage circuit: Hue Imperial City, Hoi An Ancient Town, and My Son Sanctuary are all within a day-trip distance. The city itself has developed rapidly since the early 2000s and now has a well-developed tourism infrastructure without having lost its working-city character.
How to Get to Da Nang
By air: Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is 3 kilometers from the city center, making it one of the most convenient airport locations in Vietnam. Direct flights connect it to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and major cities in South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. The taxi or Grab ride to the beach takes under 15 minutes.
By train: Da Nang station is on the Reunification Express line. The scenic train from Hanoi takes about 16 to 18 hours (sleeper recommended); from Ho Chi Minh City, around 16 hours. The stretch between Da Nang and Hue over Hai Van Pass is one of the most dramatic train journeys in Vietnam.
By private car: IDC Travel’s private transfer service can connect Da Nang to Hue (about 2.5 hours), Hoi An (45 minutes), or further north or south as part of a touring itinerary.
Best Time to Visit Da Nang

Da Nang will be more suitable for a family holiday
Da Nang’s climate differs meaningfully from the south and north, which catches some visitors off guard.
February to May is the best time for beach weather. Temperatures are warm, the sea is calm, and rainfall is at its lowest. This is the most popular period with international visitors.
June to August is hot and humid, around 35°C, but the sea is good for swimming and the skies are generally clear. Domestic tourism peaks in July and August.
September to November is the rainy and typhoon season. October is the wettest month, and flooding around the Han River is not unusual. Most international travel advisors recommend avoiding Da Nang in October specifically.
December to January is cool and can be overcast, with temperatures around 20°C. Not ideal for beach time, but fine for sightseeing.
Top Things to Do in Da Nang
1. My Khe Beach

My Khe beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world
My Khe is a 30-kilometer stretch of white sand that runs south from the city. The stretch closest to the city center is well-developed with hotels, restaurants, and cafes along the beachfront road. American forces stationed here during the Vietnam War nicknamed it “China Beach.” Today it is clean, organized, and genuinely beautiful, particularly in the early morning before the sun gets intense.
2. Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains)

A panoramic view of Marble Mountains
Five limestone outcrops rising from flat ground about 9 kilometers south of the city. Each is named after one of the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. The Water Mountain (Thuy Son) is the most developed and most visited, with cave pagodas, viewpoints over the coastline, and stone-carving workshops at the base. Go in the morning and wear decent shoes for the steps.
3. Hai Van Pass

Breathtaking view from Hai Van Pass
The mountain pass between Da Nang and Hue is one of the most scenic drives in Vietnam. At the summit (496 meters), on a clear day you can see the full arc of Da Nang Bay to the south and Lang Co lagoon to the north. You can drive it yourself, take a motorbike taxi, or include it as part of a private tour between Da Nang and Hue.
4. Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain)

Son Tra peninsula
The forested peninsula northeast of the city has a military history and is now partly open to visitors. The Linh Ung Pagoda near the summit has a 67-meter Buddha statue visible from much of the city and bay. Red-shanked douc langurs, one of the world’s most endangered primates, live in the forest here. Early morning is the best time to spot them.
5. Han Market and Con Market

Han Market, Da Nang
Han Market, near the Han River in the city center, is the older of the two and sells everything from fresh produce to local textiles and dried seafood. Con Market, slightly further west, is larger and more of an everyday shopping destination for locals. Both are good for food browsing and buying Vietnamese coffee, dried spices, and local produce to take home.
Da Nang Food
Central Vietnamese food is a distinct tradition, sitting between the lighter cuisine of the north and the sweeter flavors of the south.
Mi Quang is the dish most associated with the region: thick turmeric-yellow noodles with pork, shrimp, peanuts, sesame crackers, and a small amount of rich broth. It is eaten as much for the toppings as for the soup base.

Banh Xeo in Da Nang is a large crispy rice-flour crepe filled with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, served with a pile of fresh herbs and dipping sauce. The version here is thinner and crispier than the southern style.

Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Pancakes)
Nem Lui (grilled pork skewers) are a central Vietnamese specialty, typically eaten wrapped in rice paper with herbs and a fermented shrimp and peanut dipping sauce.

Seafood is also a serious part of eating in Da Nang. The restaurants along the coast road near My An Beach and Pham Van Dong Street specialize in fresh catches grilled simply over charcoal.

Da Nang Travel Tips
- The airport is genuinely close to the beach. An early-morning flight and an afternoon swim on the same day is completely realistic.
- Grab works well throughout the city and is the easiest way to get around without a rental vehicle.
- Day trips to Hoi An (45 minutes by car) are straightforward. Many travelers base themselves in Da Nang and day-trip to Hoi An rather than paying Hoi An’s higher hotel prices.
- Motorbike rental is available throughout the city. The roads are well-maintained and riding to the Marble Mountains or Son Tra Peninsula is practical for confident riders.
- Sunscreen is essential from February through September. The beach sun is intense.
