1. Take the Trang An Boat Trip (Trang An) – Caves, Temples and Karst Lagoons

The Trang An boat trip is the most popular of all things to do in Ninh Binh. Local rowers take you across still lagoons, through low flooded caves and past riverside temples, surrounded by limestone karsts on every side. Trang An is part of the Trang An Landscape Complex, a mixed natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
- Location: Trang An, about 15 minutes by car from Tam Coc and Hang Mua
- Best for: first-time visitors, families and photographers
- Best time: before 09:00 or in the late afternoon, when there are fewer groups; there are 3 boat circuits, and individual circuits can close after heavy rain (Tour 3 closed briefly from 31 July to 2 August 2026 because of high water)

- Cost: 300,000 VND (about US$11.50) per adult over 1.3 m and 150,000 VND (about US$5.80) for children 1 to 1.3 m tall, since 1 January 2026, including the boat, rower and insurance

Tam Coc & Hang Mua

4. Row through Tam Coc (Tam Coc) – Rice Fields and 3 Caves on the Ngo Dong River

Tam Coc means “three caves”, and the boat trip follows the Ngo Dong River through all 3, passing rice fields that turn bright green and then gold twice a year. It is shorter and more rural than Trang An, and many travellers rate it as the prettier of the 2 in harvest season.

5. Climb to the Hang Mua Viewpoint (Tam Coc Area) – Ninh Binh’s Best-Known View

8. Spot Langurs on a Bamboo Boat at Van Long Nature Reserve (Gia Van) – Quiet Wetlands without the Crowds

10. See Phat Diem Cathedral (Kim Son) – A Stone Cathedral Built in Vietnamese Style

Best Time to Visit Ninh Binh
- Late May to early June: the spring rice crop turns gold in Tam Coc, and the provincial tourism week takes place. It is hot.
- June and July: lotus season at Hang Mua. Hot and humid, with heavy showers.
- July to September: the wettest months. Floods can close individual boat circuits for a few days, as happened at Trang An in late July 2026.
- September: the second rice crop turns gold, with harvest running into early to mid October.
- October to April: cooler and drier weather, the best months for Thung Nham’s birds and for hiking in Cuc Phuong.
- January to March: festival season around Tet, with crowded weekends at Bai Dinh.

Tickets, Money and Etiquette
- Several prices rose in 2026. Trang An went up on 1 January, and Hang Mua and Thung Nham went up on 1 April, so older blog prices are out of date.
- Children are priced by height. Trang An charges the adult rate above 1.3 m, while Hang Mua charges anyone taller than 1 m.
- Carry cash in small notes for tickets, boat fees, bike hire and small restaurants.
- Visit on a weekday if you can. Weekends and Vietnamese public holidays bring large domestic crowds.
- Dress modestly at Bai Dinh, Hoa Lu, Bich Dong and Phat Diem, with shoulders and knees covered.
Getting Around Ninh Binh
A bicycle is all you need around Tam Coc, Hang Mua and Bich Dong. For Bai Dinh, Van Long, Cuc Phuong and Phat Diem, hire a car with a driver or take a taxi, as the distances are longer.
